SUMMARY:After Atlanta: A Roundtable on Race, Gender, and Anti-Asian Violence
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday, October 27 | 12:00 – 2:00pm PT\nZoom Webinar | Register here (free)\nPanelists:\nRhacel Salazar Parrenas\nProfessor of Sociology and Gender Studies, University of Southern CaliforniaLaura Kang\nProfessor, Gender and Sexuality Studies, University of California, Irvine\nMimi Thi Nguyen\nAssociate Professor and Chair, Gender and Women’s Studies and Asian American Studies, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign\nModerator: \nLaura C. Nelson\nGender & Women’s Studies, UC Berkeley\nSponsored by: Department of Gender and Women’s Studies\nCo-sponsored by: Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies (AAADS), Asian American Research Center (AARC), Center for Race and Gender\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract\nThe Atlanta spa shootings that took place in March and left eight people dead horrified the nation, yet they speak to a much longer history of racial terror and anti-Asian racism that has long marked Asian/Asian American communities as foreign, vulnerable, and disposable. This event will bring together three scholars to reflect on how the historical legacies of US imperial intervention, militarism, white supremacy, nativism, and heteropatriarchy inform contemporary forms of violence against Asian/Asian Americans, particularly women and queer people.\nThis event is free and open to the public. If you require an accommodation for effective communication (ASL interpreting/CART captioning, alternative media formats, etc.) in order to fully participate in this virtual event, please contact gilliane@berkeley.edu or 510-643-7172 with as much advance notice as possible and at least 7-10 days in advance of the event.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
