On September 29, 2009, Asian American Studies co-sponsored, with the Beatrice Bain Research Group, the Department of Ethnic Studies, the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies, the Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies, the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, the Center for Southeast Asia Studies, and Townsend Center Working Group on Muslim Identities and Cultures, a showing by Lecturer Irum Shiekh of Muslim Women of Minang, a video documentary work-in-progress about Muslim women of Western Sumatra who pass property from mother to daughter. About 50 viewers attended the screening and participated in the discussion with the director, who plans to complete the video by fall 2011.
