Community Organizer (Full-Time)

Asian Immigrant Women Advocates (AIWA) is a 39-year‐old community based non‐profit organization, which works to improve the living and working conditions of low‐income, limited English‐speaking immigrant women and youth.

AIWA is currently seeking an energetic and committed person who would strengthen base for immigrant women workers in Oakland Chinatown and the East Bay to organize themselves to improve their working conditions and empower themselves in their workplaces.  The Community Organizer will also support AIWA women workers’ campaign efforts, currently homecare workers’ struggle for a Chinese helpline at Alameda In-Home Supportive Services.

 Responsibilities:  

  • Work with immigrant women and youth to strengthen the base of immigrant women workers in Oakland and the East Bay
  • Conduct and coordinate strategic campaign research
  • Develop and conduct leadership training for campaign to involve immigrant women in campaign activities
  • In partnership with women and youth leaders, coordinate outreach, trainings, meetings, and events
  • Coordinate collective actions
  • Build network of allies to support the campaign
  • Document and evaluate campaign activities
  • Attend staff meetings and perform other organizational duties as necessary

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to grassroots organizing and leadership of limited English-speaking immigrants
  • Understanding of social and economic justice issues affecting immigrant women, youth, and their families
  • Experience with community organizing and grassroots campaigns in the immigrant community preferred
  • Excellence in communication, documentation, and meeting coordination skills
  • Ability to work well with varying communities, including labor, environmental, religious, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, women and people of color communities
  • Fluency in Cantonese and written Chinese is not required but is a plus
  • Computer experience with Microsoft Office, Windows, Google Workstation, etc. Experience with Salesforce is a plus

Compensation:

  • Salary ranges from $58,000 – $63,000
  • Excellent benefits include health, dental, vision, and pension
